loss is their prime concern and for attaining it, they tend to
skip food and go for excessive dieting which can be fatal to their
life. When we hear of someone with an eating disorder, we almost automatically
assume that the person has a problem with food. But in actual terms,
eating disorders are not an indication that a person has a problem
with food, rather eating disorders are actually only the symptoms
of serious underlying problems in that person's life. With proper
medical intervention, people can fully recover from these disorders.
Eating disorders are given various names. Anorexia
nervosa is one such eating disorder which is ruining the lives
several young people worldwide. This disorder is characterized by
a significant weight loss resulting from excessive dieting. Most
young women and an increasing number of men are motivated by the
strong desire to be thin and as they always fear of becoming obese.
These set of people can go to any length to remain thin.
Anorexics are normally guided by some false notions. They consider themselves to be fat even if they are normal or thin in reality. Underweight anorexics are often tormented by their mental state of mind which keeps alerting them to lose weight. In their attempts to become even thinner, the anorexia nervosa patients tend to avoid food and taking in calories at all costs, which can result in their death.
It's a life threatening ailment which makes its sufferers strive for perfection all the time. They set very high standards for themselves and feel they always have to prove their competence. They always put the needs of others ahead of their own needs. They feel powerful and in control when they can make themselves lose weight. Sometimes focusing on calories and losing weight is their way of blocking out feelings and emotions. For them, it's easier to diet then it is to deal with their problems directly.
Anorexia nervosa patients usually suffer from a very low self-esteem and sometimes feel they don't deserve to eat. This dangerous disorder has been promoted by the likes of TV star Calista Flockhart of Ally McBeal fame and the famous British model Kate Moss. Their extremely thin figure is an inspiration for millions of anorexics worldwide.
Anorexics are scared of therapies. They usually resist any attempts to help them because the idea of therapy or medical help is seen only as a way to force them to eat. If they can accept their problem and are willing to seek help then they can be treated quite effectively. A proper combination of psychological, nutritional and medical care is required to bring them back to normal.
Proper treatment can eradicate this ailment and make its sufferers' life enjoyable and an uncomplicated one.
